$20,000 PriZe PooL

Compete in this hackathon to identify risk factors related to substance use as well as conditions indicative of underlying substance abuse. Successful clinical rules-based apps may contribute to improving people’s health and well-being and may take home the grand prize.

Please note: This is a virtual hackathon for US residents only.

The Challenges

The prize winners will be chosen based on the best projects regardless of which challenge you choose, but your projects must fall into one of the following challenges:

Challenge 1: Understand risk factors to opioid abuse

The United States faces an ongoing opioid epidemic. Opioid misuse begins for 21-29% of people who were prescribed the medication, with 8 to 12% developing an opioid use disorder (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Proactively identifying who is at risk for opioid misuse and abuse could lead to early intervention, which may reduce healthcare costs while leading to improved outcomes for these individuals.

Using Anthem certified de-identified medical/pharmacy claims and clinical datasets in Anthem’s Digital Data Sandbox*, create an algorithm or decision tree that identifies risk factors or predictors for opioid abuse and display the results in a way that would help providers or care managers better address patient risks and needs. For example, you might look at medication refill patterns for someone post-surgery with a behavioral health diagnosis versus someone without.

Challenge 2: Investigate medical conditions indicative of underlying substance use disorder

Substance use disorder can lead to a wide range of mental and physical health conditions. At times, these consequences may be identified more frequently than the underlying substance abuse. Examples can include cirrhosis of the liver, acute pancreatitis, or respiratory problems. Pulling together the pieces of the puzzle for providers could lead to earlier or more effective interventions and improved outcomes for individuals while reducing healthcare costs.

Using Anthem certified de-identified medical/pharmacy claims and clinical datasets in Anthem’s Digital Data Sandbox, create an analysis that examines the link between medical conditions and substance use disorder, and propose a solution that allows providers and/or care managers to use this to better manage their patients. For example, you might look at odds ratios for those with pneumonia where there is a history of substance use disorder vs none.

Challenge 3: Wild card

Do you have a solution that addresses both challenges 1 and 2? Do you have an idea that is completely out of the box, but still addresses substance use disorder? Take on the wild card challenge.

What we will provide

At this hackathon, we will provide you with the following:

  • One-on-one mentor interaction to provide feedback and guidance along the way.
  • 60 Linux or Windows workspaces will be available at this hackathon. The workspace environments/sandboxes from Data Republic are pre-loaded with Anthem certified de-identified medical/pharmacy claims and clinical datasets* and will be used by your team to create an amazing project.
  • A PowerPoint slide to aide you on your hack journey. The slide will provide guidance on how you can select a challenge to tackle, what your clinical rules-based app could potentially look like, what the best metrics to report on are based on the datasets, as well as provide an example of how you can label your apps/projects.
  • Check point crash tests for project feedback before final submission.

What you will create

At this hackathon, you will be creating the following project deliverables:

  • A clinical rules-based app.
  • A completed PowerPoint documenting your project and providing valuable information about your solution.
  • A 3-5 minute video presentation/demo.

Judging criteria and prizes

Your projects will be judged on: impact, implementation, and technical execution.

Impact:

  • Will this solution have a far reach and market potential?

Implementation:

  • How seamlessly could this concept be integrated?

Technical Execution:

  • How has the team effectively utilized the available technologies?
